BUJA CITY PLAZA | PROJECT INFORMATIONS

Buja City Plaza is a major modern commercial complex and shopping center currently under development in the heart of Bujumbura, Burundi. It is being built on the site of the former Bujumbura Central Market, which was destroyed by fire in 2013.

Project Overview

• Purpose: Designed as a landmark for urban renewal, it will replace the old central market and serve as a primary hub for commerce and social interaction.

• Development: The project is a public-private partnership between the Government of Burundi (represented by the youth bank BIJE) and UBAKA LANDMARKS (part of the One Africa Investment Fund).

• Timeline: The construction phase is estimated to take 3 years, followed by a 24-year commercial operation period before the facility is transferred back to the state.

• Status: As of February 2026, the Cabinet of Burundi has approved the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to move forward with construction. ​

Planned Features

According to the UBAKANATION GROUP which is Project Developers & Designers, the plaza is expected to include:

• Shopping Malls: Extensive retail space for local and international brands.

• Commercial Tower: A planned 30-level tower for business use.

• Zones: Dedicated areas for meetings, conferences, entertainment, and recreation.

• Infrastructure: Significant parking facilities to accommodate visitors.

This project is financed by ONE AFRICA INVESTMENT FUND. The One Africa Investment Fund is a Burundi-based investment platform Founded and launched by Fablice Manirakiza to empower Burundians, both local and in the diaspora, to invest in major infrastructure projects. The fund primarily aims to finance the development of projects like the Buja City Plaza. Its main mission to become a pan african investment fund with a vision of developing major projects throughout the who africa and beyond.
